Before the theory test

This page shows what to do before the theory test at the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket). It also shows what to bring and how to handle the test itself. In Swedish the test is called kunskapsprov or teoriprov. The page covers car (B), moped (AM) and motorcycle (A1, A2 and A).

Updated 20 October 2026. Fees, ages and times can change. Always check with Trafikverket and the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) before you book.

Steps before the test

What you need to do depends on the licence you are taking. Read the part for yours.

Car (B)

  1. Learner's permit (körkortstillstånd). Apply to Transportstyrelsen. You fill in a health declaration and send an eyesight certificate, for example from an optician. The eyesight certificate must be no more than two months old. It costs nothing to apply, and it normally takes up to four weeks. The permit is valid for five years.
  2. Driving practice. You may start practising with a car when you are 16. At a driving school, the learner's permit is enough. If you practise privately, you also need a supervisor (handledare) who Transportstyrelsen has approved for you. The supervisor must be at least 24 and must have held a car licence for at least five of the last ten years. Since 1 August 2026, no introduction course is needed.
  3. Risk education (riskutbildning). It has two parts. Part 1 (riskettan) is about alcohol, drugs, tiredness and other risks. Part 2 (risktvåan) is about speed and road conditions, among other things, and includes the skid pan. Both parts must be done and valid when you arrive for the theory test. A driving school books it for you. If you practise privately, you book it yourself with a course provider. Risk education is valid until you get your licence, or for at most five years.
  4. Book the test. You cannot book without a learner's permit. You may take the test once you are 18. Other rules apply if you take driver education at upper secondary school or in adult education (komvux). Trafikverket suggests booking the theory test and the driving test at the same time, a few weeks apart. Then you have time to retake the theory test if you need to.

Ages and times can change. Check with Transportstyrelsen.

Moped (AM)

  1. Learner's permit. The same application as for a car, with a health declaration and an eyesight certificate.
  2. The AM course. It is required and is given by an approved course provider. It is at least 17 hours, with at least 7 hours of practical training. You may start the practical part at 14 years and 9 months. You must not practise privately, only with the course provider.
  3. Book the test. When the course provider has reported that you are done, you can book the test with Trafikverket. The course is valid for five years and must be valid on the test day. You may take the test once you are 15.

AM has no driving test. When you pass the theory test, you may ride straight away, as long as you carry valid ID.

Motorcycle (A1, A2 and A)

  1. Learner's permit. The same application as for a car.
  2. Driving practice. You may start practising for A1 at 15 years and 9 months, and for A2 at 17 years and 6 months. For A the age is 23, or 19 years and 6 months if you have held A2 for at least a year and a half. If you practise privately, your supervisor must ride with you as a passenger or ride their own motorcycle.
  3. Risk education for motorcycles. It has two parts, and part 2 takes place on a manoeuvring track. Both parts must be done and valid before the theory test. Risk education for cars does not count for motorcycles.
  4. Book the test. The theory test is the same for A1, A2 and A. You may take it from 16 for A1, 18 for A2 and 24 for A. If you already hold A1 or A2, you only take the driving test for the next category.

Ages and times can change. Check with Transportstyrelsen.

Book the test

You book and pay in Trafikverket's booking service. You log in there. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian can log in and book for you.

  • You pay by Swish or card. If you are over 18, you can also get an invoice after the test.
  • If you are under 18 when you book, the test must be paid at least 25 hours before it starts. Otherwise it is cancelled.
  • The test costs 420 SEK on weekdays between 07:30 and 18:00, and 520 SEK at other times. The photo costs 120 SEK. Fees can change, so check with Trafikverket.

Cancel or change your booking

  • Cancel at least 24 hours before the test. Then the fee is refunded automatically.
  • If you move a test you have already paid for, the payment moves to the new time.
  • If you cancel later, or do not turn up, you still pay. This also applies if your bus is late or the traffic is slow.
  • If you are ill, you can apply for a refund. You need a certificate from a doctor or other healthcare provider.

How the test works

The test works the same way for car, moped and motorcycle. The questions are different.

  • 70 questions. Each question has one correct answer.
  • 5 of the questions are trial questions that do not count. So you can get at most 65 points.
  • You need 52 points to pass. You may get at most 13 wrong among the questions that count.
  • You have 50 minutes.

First you show your ID and get a seat. The test supervisor briefly explains what happens, and you watch a film. Then you start the test yourself. Only then does the time start.

At the computer there are headphones, so you can listen to the questions in Swedish. There is also a calculator. The screen is a touch screen, and there is a pen. Questions can have a picture or a film.

The test covers five areas: vehicle knowledge and handling, environment, road safety, traffic rules and personal factors. The questions you find online are not the same as on the test. So it pays to understand the rules instead of learning answers by heart.

Language and support

The theory test for cars is available in 15 languages. You choose the language when you book, and you can switch to Swedish during the test. For moped and motorcycle, Trafikverket only mentions listening to the questions in Swedish.

You can apply to take the test with an interpreter. The test time is then 100 minutes, and the test is booked through Trafikverket's customer service. If you have dyslexia or ADHD, for example, you can apply for extra time or an oral test. Apply in good time. A decision normally takes up to four weeks, and you book the test once your application is approved.

What to bring

  • Valid ID. It must be a physical document, in one piece and not expired.
  • Time. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Your photo is taken before the test, and it goes on your licence.
  • Nothing else. Calculators and headphones are in the room.

Accepted ID

  • Swedish driving licence
  • Swedish national ID card
  • ID card from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket)
  • Swedish EU passport and other EU passports
  • national ID card from another EU country, issued on 2 August 2021 or later
  • SIS-marked company card, service card or ID card
  • passport from the Faroe Islands, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland

Freja eID and digital BankID cards are not accepted.

If you have no ID, you can apply for someone else to confirm who you are. The application must arrive at least two weeks before the test, and that person must come with you.

In the test room

Your phone must be completely switched off. Before you start, you promise not to use any aids that are not allowed. Anyone who cheats is reported to the police and banned from tests for one or two years.

During the test

Some tips for the test itself. Tips 2, 7 and 8 come from Trafikverket. The rest are our own.

  1. Keep the pace. 50 minutes for 70 questions is about 43 seconds per question. At question 35, try to have at least 25 minutes left.
  2. Do not get stuck. If you are unsure, mark the question and go back to it at the end.
  3. Read every word. Small words change the whole question. Look for not, always, never, only and just.
  4. Read every answer. Read all the options before you choose, even when the first one looks right.
  5. Look at the whole picture. Check the signs, the lines and who is coming from which direction.
  6. Answer every question. A question with no answer cannot give you a point.
  7. Ask about a word. If you do not understand a word, you may raise your hand and ask.
  8. Finish the test yourself. When you have answered all the questions, you choose to end the test.

After the test

You see on the screen straight away whether you passed. The result is also in the booking service.

Car (B)

A passed theory test is valid for one year from the test day. You must pass the driving test within that time. The one-year rule applies to tests taken on or after 19 August 2026. Check with Trafikverket.

Moped (AM)

AM has no driving test. When you pass the theory test, you may ride straight away, as long as you carry valid ID. Transportstyrelsen makes the licence card.

Motorcycle

A passed theory test is valid for one year. You must pass the driving test within that time. Motorcycle driving tests only take place in the summer half of the year, from about late April to late October. It varies between test centres, so check the dates with Trafikverket.

If you do not pass

A failed test shows you where to practise. Here is what to do.

  1. See your result. Log in to the booking service. Trafikverket does not show which questions you got wrong. But you find out in which areas you need more practice.
  2. Book a new test. It costs the same as the first one. For a car, you can take one test per day.
  3. Practise those areas first. Then take mock tests until you score 52 or more several times in a row.

Your learner's permit and your course must also be valid on the day of the new test.

Klart fram splits the course into the same five areas as the test. There you see what you miss and practise exactly that.
